A white pickup and multiple police vehicles are at the scene of an officer-involved shooting Friday afternoon in South Rome where Jeron Bruce Bradford, 61, was shot and later died.

Jeron Bruce Bradford, 61, has died after he was shot by a Rome police officer outside of Chuck's Corner Convenience Store on South Broad Street Friday.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation.

According to a report from the GBI, the shooting took place at approximately 12 p.m. after a Rome police officer pulled over a white pickup truck being driven by Bradford, in the 200 block of South Broad Street Southwest.

After being pulled over, the report stated that Bradford exited his vehicle and confronted the officer. The officer then gave Bradford verbal commands, which he refused to follow; instead, Bradford pulled a gun from his pants and shot at the officer.

The officer then shot Bradford, and he was later transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to the GBI.

Bradford’s body will be taken to the GBI’s Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy as the agency investigates the shooting.

After the GBI has completed its investigation, the findings will be sent to the Floyd County District Attorney’s Office for review.
