Segment Performance and Other Key Metrics

Sypris Technologies generated revenues of $14.9 million, up 5.6% from $14.1 million a year earlier, supported by strong energy product sales and a rebound in the commercial vehicle market. Segment gross profit increased to $2.7 million from $2.1 million, while gross margin expanded to 18.5% from 15.2%. Higher volumes supported profitability, though results included a $0.5 million unfavorable foreign currency impact related to the company's Mexican subsidiary.

Sypris Electronics revenues fell 10.8% year over year to $15.5 million from $17.3 million, reflecting material availability issues and customer design changes on certain new programs that delayed deliveries. The segment recorded a gross loss of $0.8 million compared with gross profit of $0.4 million a year earlier. The result included $0.7 million of excess and obsolete inventory charges.

At the consolidated level, gross profit declined to $2 million from $2.6 million, while selling, general and administrative expenses increased to $4.4 million from $4 million. Consequently, operating loss widened to $2.5 million from $1.4 million.

As of July 5, 2026, cash and cash equivalents were $5.9 million, down from $6.8 million at Dec. 31, 2025. Inventory declined to $50.5 million from $52.5 million.

Total assets were $105.2 million, down from $107.8 million at 2025-end.

Total stockholders’ equity declined to $11.7 million from $17.8 million over the same period.

Net cash used in operating activities during the first six months of 2026 was $0.5 million compared with $4.4 million in the prior-year period.

Management Commentary

Management highlighted improving demand across several end markets. Companywide orders increased 25% sequentially, driven by a 54% increase in Sypris Electronics bookings for satellite and deep-space programs and subsea fiber-optic data network systems. Energy-product bookings increased 12% year over year during the first half of 2026. Management also pointed to opportunities stemming from LNG demand, electricity requirements associated with AI-related data centers and potential applications in carbon capture and defense markets.

Factors Influencing the Headline Numbers

The quarter reflected divergent trends between the company's two businesses. Sypris Technologies benefited from higher volumes as commercial vehicle activity began to recover and energy-product sales remained strong. In contrast, Sypris Electronics faced material shortages that delayed customer deliveries, restricted production ramp-ups and resulted in out-of-sequence manufacturing. These disruptions reduced operational efficiency and increased costs. Foreign exchange movements, elevated healthcare expenses, unabsorbed overhead, scrap and inventory-related charges also weighed on consolidated profitability.

Management's Outlook

Management expects the challenging operating environment to improve as 2026 progresses. Supported by a robust backlog and recent program wins, the company expects the balance of the year to feature accelerating top-line growth and substantially improved operating performance. Sypris Electronics, in particular, is positioned for additional growth as material availability improves and recent orders move toward production and delivery.
