The Center Square) – The University of Wisconsin system will be asking for $730 million from the state for its two-year operating budget after the school’s Board of Regents approved the budget request.

That request includes $190 million in additional funding in order to freeze tuition for two years and cap the increase at the rate of inflation for the two next years.

It also includes an additional $90 million of funding to use toward training 35,000 new healthcare professionals over a 10-year span.

“Our budget request reflects a sizable investment, but one that is designed to achieve measurable outcomes that benefit all of Wisconsin,” Regent Tom Palzewicz said during his budget presentation. “We look forward to partnering with policymakers to advance a budget that fulfills the UWs’ mission to deliver results.”

The budget plan comes as the University of Wisconsin-Madison admission rate reached an all-time low of 41% in 2025, down from 57% in 2009. The school has published data to show county-by-county and school-by-school admissions rates.

The budget approval also included a more than $2 billion capital budget request for the two-year period that includes $1.2 billion of general fund supported borrowing, $673.3 million of program revenue supported borrowing, $11.0 million of UW Cash, and of $115.1 million Non-UW Cash.

That includes renovating nearly 9.8 million square feet and demolishing almost 363,000 gross square feet of school facilities.

The UW System long-term capital plan includes 232 projects and programs at an estimated cost of $6 billion in planned spending through 2033.
