GRANGER — Sunnyside City Council member Keren J. Vazquez is facing a fourth-degree assault charge following a July 31 arrest in Granger.

Vasquez, 28, who has served on the council since 2024, was arrested after an altercation with a man, according to reports from the Granger Police Department.

According to the incident narrative report, Granger Police Officer Diego Isiordia reported seeing a man and woman struggling near a vehicle at about 4:57 p.m. He said he saw the woman push the man away before she entered the vehicle and drove off.

Isiordia spoke with the man and asked another officer to stop the sedan. The man initially told officers that nothing was wrong and declined to provide details about the encounter.

According to the report, officers observed fresh scratches on the man’s face. Both the and Vazquez later said the scratches occurred while working in the fields.

Officer J. Hurst reported that Vazquez said she and the man had been dating for about five months and had argued since July 30. According to Hurst, Vazquez also acknowledged that she had pushed him so he would leave the vehicle during the encounter.

Based on the officers’ observations and the statements gathered, Isiordia reported establishing probable cause to arrest Vazquez on suspicion of fourth-degree assault involving domestic violence under RCW 9A.36.041.

Vazquez was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Granger Police Department. There, she told officers that she and the man had been “having problems” for several days and had argued before arriving at the park, according to the report.

Vazquez was booked on suspicion of fourth-degree assault involving domestic violence after Judge Douglas K. Garrison found probable cause and ordered a no-contact order, according to the report.

She appeared in Granger Municipal Court on Aug. 5 where Garrison issued the no-contact order.

A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Sept. 16.
