(The Center Square) – Virginia ranked 10th among the nation’s most independent states in a new report released ahead of Independence Day.
The commonwealth earned an overall score of 57.99 in the WalletHub report, which compared all 50 states across financial, government, job market, international trade and personal dependency measures.
Virginia’s strongest showing came in financial measures. The commonwealth ranked second for median household income adjusted for the cost of living and eighth for financial dependency.
Virginia also ranked third for having one of the lowest shares of state gross domestic product generated by exports to other countries. That means exports make up a smaller share of Virginia’s overall economy than in most states, not that Virginia exports very little.
Federal trade data show Virginia exported about $19 billion in goods worldwide in 2025. Canada was Virginia’s largest export market, followed by Mexico, Germany, India and South Korea.
Chemicals, transportation equipment, computer and electronic products, machinery and food products were among the commonwealth’s leading export categories.
The report gave Virginia a government dependency rank of 28, a job market dependency rank of 34 and an international trade dependency rank of 8.
A separate WalletHub report June 2 released ranked Virginia first overall among states where people have the highest incomes. That report measured income across high-, middle- and lower-income households.
In that report, Virginia’s median annual income adjusted for cost of living was $95,339. The top 5% of earners averaged $545,097 annually, while the bottom 20% averaged $19,671.
The independence report, released June 23, evaluated states using 39 indicators across five categories: consumer finances, government reliance, the job market, international trade and personal habits.
Maryland ranked 24th overall.
