(The Center Square) – Virginians are paying less at the pump this week as gasoline prices have fallen for three straight weeks, with the statewide average for regular unleaded gasoline dropping to $3.77 per gallon, according to AAA.

Virginia’s average price was down from $3.91 a week ago and $4.32 a month ago. The average stood at $3.06 per gallon one year ago.

The national average for regular unleaded gasoline was $4.03 per gallon Wednesday, also continuing a three-week decline.

AAA said the national average has fallen from about $4.56 per gallon on May 21. The organization attributed the decline in part to crude oil prices remaining below $100 per barrel.

Prices have fallen across Virginia’s major metropolitan areas over the past month.

The Richmond-Petersburg area averaged $3.70 per gallon Wednesday, down from $4.35 a month ago. Lynchburg averaged $3.68 per gallon, down from $4.25 a month ago. Northern Virginia averaged $3.85, compared with $4.41 a month earlier.

GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan said average gasoline prices fell in 47 states over the past week and could continue trending lower if current market conditions remain in place.

While Virginia’s average price stood at $3.77 per gallon Wednesday, GasBuddy reported some stations in Lynchburg selling regular gasoline for about $3.17 per gallon. Stations in Fishersville and Fredericksburg were reporting prices as low as $3.28 and $3.29 per gallon, respectively.

AAA said gasoline prices remain below the record highs reached in June 2022, when Virginia’s average regular gasoline price approached $5 per gallon.
