Street improvement project underway in Marshall

MARSHALL, Texas - Construction is ramping up as crews prepare to rebuild more than a dozen neighborhood streets across Marshall.

City leaders say the street improvement program is part of a strategic effort to rebuild and maintain public streets citywide. The work is expected to repair damage from heavy traffic, weather and aging pavement.

“We’re starting on Johnson Street, one of the first streets identified, and we’re working to finish it before school starts next week,” said Douglas Box, interim public works director.

Box says 27 neighborhood streets are scheduled for improvements.

“Crews are reconstructing the street by pulverizing and mixing the existing material before adding an overlay. When it’s finished, it will be a much smoother roadway,” Box said.

The city is placing door hangers to remind residents to watch for construction equipment and move vehicles parked along the street.

Motorists are urged to slow down and take alternate routes when possible. Box says the investment will help improve traffic safety.

"These are very important because they address the needs of our citizens. They address ease of mobility and transportation to and from getting around, which I think enhances their quality of life," said Box.

Higgins Street is next on the street improvement list.

The roadway not only has potholes, but several residents say it's prone to flooding during rainy weather. Reconstruction of all the streets on the list is expected to be completed this fall.

"We look at resources available to affect that and make that determination on how many we can do based on the money that we have," said Box.

The total cost of the construction projects is about $2 million.
