Dumas and Sunray have successful scrimmages

The Sunray Bobcats and Dumas Demons both travelled Friday, Aug. 14 to take part in their first scrimmages of the season. Sunray went to Dalhart and the Demons made their way to Lubbock in a Tri-Scrimmage against Estacado and Odessa.

“We’ve done these the last two or three years, and I like it” said Dumas head football coach Aaron Dunnam on the tri-scrimmages. He added,” You have to shift gears a lot between two different teams with different fronts, different offenses, different defenses and we saw some good things.”

With it being a scrimmage there is the quick whistle when it comes to the quarterback, which Dunnam is fine with but it did take away some of senior quarterback Colton Mills’ game, which is escaping the pocket and making plays with his legs.

Dunnam feels good where the team is at this point of the offseason. But says there are still some things to work on. The receiving core is young and they will play quite a few players on both sides of the ball, more so than they’ve had to do in the past.

The Demons has their final scrimmage Thursday, Aug. 20 another scrimmage at Plainview to take on Big Springs.  

The Bobcats scrimmaged the Golden Wolves Friday evening and according to head football coach Matthew Clemens, he is very pleased where they are. “ I think it went a lot better than we anticipated. Our kids went out there and really competed. Defensively, we are much further than I expected to be at this point,” said Clemens.

The offense is younger with underclassmen on the line, but Zeke Grajeda is back at the quarterback position and Clemens is pleased to have him at the helm. “He got a lot of valuable experience last year. There was a lot of learning as a whole with everybody else too. He knows what he needs to work on and fix, and he’s family, he’s my nephew so it’s been fun to coach him from the sidelines.,” said Clemens.

The Bobcats will have their final scrimmage against Lubbock Trinity at Canyon High School Friday, Aug. 21.
