Demonettes go 4-1 at Bev Bell, Down Vega in home Opener
The Dumas Demonette volleyball team has been busy since the season began. Last weekend they travelled to Abilene to play in the Bev Bell Tournament where they went 4-1 and took gold in the consolation bracket. They then hosted their first home game against the Vega Lady Longhorns Tuesday, Aug. 17 with a 3-1 (25-11, 25-11, 18-25, 25-15) win. The freshman team competed in the Pampa Tournament Thursday, Aug. 13 and Saturday, Aug. 15 where they finished 2-2. The junior varsity came away with a 2-1 (25-23, 25-23, 25-20) victory over Vega Tuesday, Aug. 18.

Varsity
On Day One of the Bev Bell Tournament the Demonettes defeated Abilene junior varsity 2-0 (25-12, 25-14), followed by a 2-1 victory over Jim Ned (25-19,18-25, 25-21). Brooklyn Rose led with 16 kills, followed by Demi Bitonel with 12 kills, and Alang Makuei with 11 kills. Sophie Clements recorded 27 assists and 15 digs, while Yrdian Catano finished with 22 assists and for aces. Gabi Holt finished he day with 23 digs and three aces, Jessika Eads also had three aces. Makuei and Rose each had a block.
On Day Two Dumas fell to Krum 2-1 (26-28, 25-8, 15-25). They bounced back with a 2-0 sweep over Abilene Cooper (25-21, 25-21). They ended the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Lubbock Coronado (25-15, 17-25, 25-21).
Bitonel and Rose both had 17 kills, followed by Clements with 15. Bitonel also recorded six aces and three blocks. Clements finished the day with 43 assists, with Catano’s 26 assists. Makuei was busy at the net with eight blocks.
The Demonettes finished as Gold Bracket Consolation Champions and Bitonel was named to the All-Tournament Team.
On Tuesday evening the Demonettes put on a show for the home crowd. After jumping on the Lady Longhorns with a 15-7 lead, Vega called a timeout try and regroup. Dumas’ offense continued to shine as they took a 10-point lead with a score of 21-11 before the Lady Longhorns tried to find an answer. The Demonettes took Set One 25-11.
Set Two was much the same as Set One. The Demonettes took a quick 12-4 lead before Vega was forced to take a water break and try and figure out how to get anything going. Dumas continued to pour it on taking another 25-11 set. Set Three was much different; Vega came out on fire. They took a 16-7 lead over Dumas forcing the Demonettes to call a timeout to regroup. The break didn’t go in Dumas’ way as the Lady Longhorns continued to pull away to a 20-11 lead and then eventually taking the set with a 25-18 win after Dumas tried to rally back.
Set Four was all Dumas once again. After taking a 14-01 lead over Vega, the Lady Longhorns tried to regroup but it wasn’t enough as Dumas pulled away for the eventual 25-15 victory.
Clements was o fire with 22 assists, 10 digs, and eight kills. Makuei finished with 13 kills and three blocks. Catano had a busy night with 13 assists and four aces. Holt eneded the evening with 16 digs, and two aces. Eads also finished with two aces, as Bitonel and Rose each had a block and a half at the net.
“I thought our girls stayed together, competed hard, and made plays when we needed to. We’re grateful for everyone who came out and created that atmosphere for our kids. It was a great way to open up at home, and we’re excited to keep building from here,” said head coach Ashlei Atteberry.
The Demonettes sit at 5-2 on the season.
Junior Varsity
The junior varsity saw its first action since the first game against Tascosa Tuesday, Aug. 18. The Demonettes jumped to an 8-3 lead in Set One. They continued to pull away with an 11-9 lead until Vega started to make a comeback. The Demonettes found themselves trailing 19-14 forcing a timeout to regroup after letting the lead slip away. Vega took the set 23-23.
Set Two for the junior varsity was another bar burner. Dumas once again took a lead with a score of 12-7, then they pulled away to an 18-11 lead. The Lady Longhorns battled back to come within a couple with a score od 22-20. Dumas held on with the 25-23 win.
Set Three was almost disastrous for the Demonettes. They fell behind early to a 9-5 deficit. The Lady Longhorns continued to pour it on with a 17-13 lead. At one point the Demonettes trailed 20-14, but they battled and before long they took a 21-20 lead forcing Vega to call a timeout. Dumas came out of the break confident and finished the match off with the 25-20 victory.
Emily Chacon finished the evening with 23 digs, followed by Haylee Vargas with 16. Berkley Scott and Kimberly Munoz both recorded five kills, as Tamara Mendoza finished with eight assists, and Bailey Maynez had five assists. To round out the stat leaders Tamiya Almanza and Charlee Quirk both had two blocks at the net.
Freshman
The Dumas freshman team is coming off a 2-2 record at the Pampa Tournament last weekend. On Day One they fell to Tascosa 2-0 (25-18, 25-23), followed by a 2-1 victory over Borger (22-25, 25-20, 8-5), the third set was cut short due to the time limit being reached. On Day Two they fell to canyon 2-0 (25-18, 25-22), followed by a 2-0 victory over Dalhart (26-24, 25-13). To finished third in the Silver Bracket.
Natlie Brazell had three kills, three blocks, and three aces. Mireya Valenciano finished the tournament with four aces.
The Dmoenttes will be back in action when they take part in the Lu Allen tournament in Graham this weekend. The junior varsity will be at Amarillo High Tournament this weekend.
