(The Center Square) – Alan Wilson, son of a congressman and four-term attorney general, on Tuesday won a place on the Republican ticket for South Carolina governor ahead of a candidate endorsed by Donald Trump.

Wilson, in unofficial results with 100% of counties reporting, defeated Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette 68.6%-31.4% in a race with more than 318,000 votes cast. Less than 10% of the vote in the primary election runoff was in about 25 minutes after polls closed when the race was called with Wilson ahead by 31%.

Wilson is the son of 13-term U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson. Evette had led a five-candidate field two weeks ago carrying the nod of the second-term Republican president.

On June 9, Evette (28.9%) and Wilson (26.2%) gained more than half of the nearly 465,000 votes cast ahead of U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman (17.1%), coastal businessman and political outsider Rom Reddy (14.2%) and U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace (12.1%).

State Rep. Jermaine Johsnon won the Democrats’ gubernatorial primary.

In Wilson’s place on the Republican attorney general ticket will be David Stumbo, a 55.8%-44.3% winner over state Sen. Stephen Goldfinch. Richard Hricik is the Democrat on the Nov. 3 ballot.

Cody Simpson defeated Danny Ford 62.6%-37.4% in the Republican primary runoff for agriculture commissioner. Ford’s father of the same name was the legendary Clemson football coach. Democrat DeShawn Blanding and Libertarian Michael Sullens are the competition in the fall.

Republicans chose Jenny Costa Honeycutt over state Rep. Mark Smith 53.7%-46.3% in the 1st Congressional District runoff. Democrats chose Nancy Lacore over Mac Deford 52.1%-47.9%. The field in November is also a choice between Libertarian Bill Reeside, Margo Ellis of the Alliance Party and the independent write-in candidacy of Clayton Cuteri.

Zyon Khalifa defeated David Robinson II 53.8%-46.2% in the Democrats’ runoff for the 2nd Congressional District. The challenge ahead is to stop the 14th term of Joe Wilson. Dayna Alane Smith represents the Workers Party in the race.

Three Republican runoffs for the state House of Representatives were also decided Tuesday. Rep. Don Chapman, bidding for a third term, defeated Sherry Hodges 54.5%-45.5% in District 8; Hunter Hackett defeated Scotty Whetstone 67.3%-32.7% in District 96; and Jarrod Brooks defeated Kristy Gore 64.6%-35.4% in District 99.
