Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is calling for artificial intelligence development to slow down, in order to give safety measures time to catch up.

Amodei is calling for independent monitoring of AI models as they are developed, with industrywide and global regulation.

Sam Altman of OpenAI and Elon Musk have both said they agree.

Still, the proposal is getting pushback, including from President Donald Trump who wrote on social media, calling some of the proposed risks a "hoax."

"We can put guardrails, we can do this and that, but I think you have a lot of negative forces that are bringing it up that shouldn't be bringing it up, and they're bringing up things that won't happen," Trump said.

David Kopec, professor of computer science at Albright College in Reading, says government oversight makes sense, but some calling for regulation may have ulterior motives.

"These companies have quickly grown to dominate the forefront of the industry, and if regulations come in place that slow down all of their potential competitors, it might actually give them kind of a duopoly, triopoly kind of position in the industry," Kopec said.

Kopec says it would also be incredibly difficult to set up global regulations.

"So if we slow down the U.S. companies, are we just kind of giving China an advantage here?" Kopec said.

Kopec says the biggest challenge is finding a way to regulate rapidly developing AI models without hurting American innovation.

"I think it needs to be in such a way that we don't constrain the development of the industry at the same time. Because there's a lot of good things coming out of it, too," Kopec said.
