Missoula, Mont. — Dorms filled up at the University of Montana as new and returning students arrived on campus for the fall semester.

The university said more than 2,000 students live in its residence halls. International students and some athletes moved in early, but most students got their introduction to dorm life Monday.

Freshman international business major Kyan Elam was among them.

“It’s just figuring out what you want and packing it. Once you have that down, it’s easy," he said. "Especially if it’s your first time moving, you have a lot more stuff than if you've moved before."

Students and families had help as they moved in. UM had members of several campus organizations there to make the process easier.

One of those volunteers was Ben Kelly, a member of the school’s Advocates group.

“I think at the core of it, we’re like trying to build relationships with people. We’re trying to make people feel seen," he said. They’re scared, they’re nervous. They’re excited too. We just want to be with the scared grandmas and the excited moms, just being there and making connections."

Orientation week will give students like Elam a chance to settle in before classes begins Monday, the 24th.

He said he was most excited for a class with a family connection.

“History of Rock and Roll," said Elam. "My dad took it and my grandma took it, so I’m excited for it. They both liked it, so I’m pretty sure I'll like it too."

Montana State University's move-in starts next week.
