Some hotels, trails reopen in Glacier National Park after flooding

UPDATE: July 1 at 10:07 a.m. 

Going-to-the-Sun Road is back open in its entirety on Wednesday, according to Glacier National Park. Many Glacier Road has also reopened. 

Glacier National Park said that Many Glacier Hotel and the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn are back open to guests and visitors as well. Many Glacier Campground remains closed. 

Several trails are closed in Many Glacier. Open trails are Swiftcurrent Lake Loop, Trail to Grinnell Lake via Josephine South Shore, and Apikuni Falls, although lake access is not available at Grinnell Lake and hikers at Apikuni Falls are advised not to climb rocks at the base of the falls. 

"Visitors should be extra vigilant near water," the park said. "Swift, cold streams and rivers, slick rocks, and slippery logs all present dangers. Never walk, play, or climb on slippery rocks and logs, especially around waterfalls. Visitors should expect rivers and streams to remain high and dangerous."

UPDATE: June 30 at 6:38 p.m.

According to an update from GNP officials, Going-to-the-Sun Road is expected to fully reopen on Tuesday night. The Logan Pass Shuttle system and parking lot are both expected to commence as scheduled on Wednesday.

GNP officials also reported that the Many Glacier Hotel and Swiftcurrent Motor Inn will be available for guest check-in and visitor services by Wednesday.

Despite this, all trails in the Many Glacier Valley, as well as the Many Glacier Campground, will remain closed until officials have ensured that conditions are safe.

"The campground is projected to reopen for camping on July 2 if conditions allow," GNP officials said.

Additionally, public boating, commercial guided boat tours and horseback trail rides in the valley remain suspended prior to confirmation that conditions are safe.

"Visitors are reminded to watch their surroundings near water. Swift, cold glacial streams and rivers, slick rocks and slippery logs all present dangers," GNP officials stated. "Never walk, play, or climb on slippery rocks and logs, especially around waterfalls. Visitors should expect rivers and streams to remain high with swiftly flowing water.

UPDATE: June 30 at 4:25 p.m.

GNP posted another update, stating the park could not confirm whether Going-to-the-Sun Road would open this week.

With the rain eased, crews are beginning damage assessments. They say flooding can lead to rock falls and washouts that create unsafe conditions and that closed areas will stay shut until they are safe.

Officials also warned that rivers are running high with fast currents, possible freezing temperatures, debris and other hidden hazards. They said even six inches of water can knock a person down and carry them downstream.

Closures in Many Glacier Valley and along alpine sections of Going-to-the-Sun Road are also pushing more visitors into other parts of the park, according to officials. That means longer entrance lines, busier visitor centers and more crowded trails in open areas.

GLACIER NATIONAL PARK - The entirety of the Many Glacier Valley is closed due to flooding on Monday afternoon, according to Glacier National Park (GNP). The closure includes Many Glacier Hotel, Swiftcurrent Motor Inn and the Many Glacier Campground. 

Going-to-the-Sun Road is also closed between Avalanche and Rising Sun, according to Glacier National Park, "due to heavy rain and debris."
