MONTANA — As Fourth of July weekend began, state fire officials urged people across Montana to be careful outdoors because most wildfires are caused by people.

DNRC said about 85% of wildfires were human-caused, making prevention especially important as many people headed out to celebrate.

A state official shared a simple message about campfires.

"Never leave it unattended. Always use existing fire rings. Before you leave. After you're finished having fun, make sure that you drown that fire extinguisher completely. Make sure that it's cold to the touch. Drown. Stir. Feel. Drown. Stir. Feel again," she said.

DNRC also reminded people not to park on tall grass. The agency explained that parts of a vehicle's exhaust system can get hot enough to ignite dry grass on contact.
