MONTANA — Montana’s unemployment rate fell to 3.3% in June, but state labor leaders said the number does not capture the full picture.

They noted that some of Montana’s biggest workforce gaps remain in health care, construction, advanced manufacturing and computing, education and childcare, financial and professional services and energy.

Sarah Swanson, commissioner of the Montana Department of Labor & Industry, said those sectors carry a major share of the state’s workforce needs.

“All together, those six high impact industries represent nearly 65% of our total workforce in Montana. But most importantly, they represent 300,000 new skilled, trained workers needed in the Montana workforce. In the next ten years, over 30,000 new skilled, trained workers in those six industries alone are needed every year for the next ten,” said Sarah Swanson.

To help address that need, the department continued expanding registered apprenticeship programs across Montana.

Officials say nearly 3,000 apprentices are training with more than 800 employers statewide.
