Helena police investigating potential stabbing in front of Super 8 hotel; man hospitalized

Helena police continue to investigate what they believe was a stabbing in front of the Super 8 hotel on 11th Avenue early Thursday morning that left one man hospitalized, a spokesperson said Thursday afternoon.

Police responded to the scene at 1:26 a.m. Thursday and found a man bleeding heavily, with injuries “believed to be stab wounds,” Capt. Adam Shanks said in a press release.

The man was taken to St. Peter’s Health with life-threatening injuries but has since stabilized, Shanks said. He remained hospitalized on Thursday afternoon.

Several officers were seen at the scene around 9 a.m., along with a fire truck that was hosing off the sidewalk and roadway in front of the hotel. 11th Avenue was blocked off in the area at the time.

Shanks said because of the nature and severity of the man’s injuries, HPD detectives responded to investigate the incident as a criminal matter and interviewed “numerous” witnesses and people who may have been involved in events leading up to the man’s injuries.

But no arrests had been made as of Thursday afternoon, Shanks said.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and detectives are continuing to gather information to determine exactly what occurred,” he wrote in the press release.
