Last Chance Stampede in Helena adds heat safety steps at fair

Helena, Mont. — Organizers at the Last Chance Stampede and Fair said extra safety measures are in place this week as hot weather settles over fair season.

They partnered with local law enforcement and health services to have help at the fairgrounds in case of emergencies. Organizers said that added support helped protect families while people enjoy the fair.

Last Chance Stampede and Fair organizer Cory Popp said emergency crews understand how important the fair is to the community and are prepared to respond quickly if needed.

"They're aware that the fair is a big deal for the community and there’s a lot of people. So obviously they’re quick to respond to an event like this. So it should be a good and safe year like usual," said Cory Popp.

Popp said people who needed a break from the heat can cool off inside the exhibit hall. He also pointed to shaded areas, grassy spots and food concession areas where fairgoers could get something to drink.

In hot conditions like these, people can face heat stroke. Symptoms can include dizziness, confusion, a fast heartbeat, fast and shallow breathing and nausea.

If someone shows signs of heat stroke, call 911 right away and move them out of the sun until help arrives.
