POLSON, Montana — A couple was rescued south of Cromwell Island after their kayak started taking on water and they could no longer paddle, Lake County Search and Rescue said in a release.

The 911 call came in at 11:11 a.m. Sunday. The reporting party told dispatch the kayak was south of Cromwell Island and needed help.

Search and rescue said they left from Polson within 10 minutes of the report. Before that crew reached the area, good Samaritans rescued the couple.

The kayak remained in the water after the rescue. Search and rescue described it as capsized with the stern up about 100 yards south-southeast of Cromwell Island.

Lake County Search and Rescue also shared a reminder for people heading onto the water. The agency advised people to wear proper safety gear including a life jacket on their body.

People on the water are urged to stay close to others in their group and have a backup plan along with tools to help if conditions change or something goes wrong.

If someone ends up in the water, the agency advises floating on your back face up until reaching calmer water.
