CLANCY, Mont. — Lightning from a storm the night before kept the Clancy Volunteer Fire Department busy as crews responded to three fires.
Two of those fires were quickly put out on private property in Clancy. A third fire, the Strawberry Creek Fire, was reported about five miles south of Montana City.
Firefighters hiked Pinecrest Trail, found the fire and built containment around it. The U.S. Forest Service then took over the operation.
Assistant Fire Chief Mike McCarthy said public calls helped crews respond before the fires grew.
“Smelling smoke or seeing smoke and not being afraid to call Jefferson County dispatch and giving them a heads up. The sooner we can get on those; the sooner we can get them put out,” said Mike McCarthy.
The Strawberry Creek Fire is estimated at a quarter-acre and remains a developing situation.
