BUTTE, Mont. — Butte police warned the community about possible fentanyl-contaminated cocaine after a series of recent overdose incidents.

According to a public advisory from the Butte Police Department, those reports had not been confirmed, but the warning was issued as a safety measure.

The department urged people to avoid illegal drugs and said any street drug could be mixed with fentanyl, which can be deadly.

Officials said anyone who thought a person was having an opioid overdose should call 911 right away.

They said warning signs could include slow or stopped breathing, not responding, being unable to wake up, blue or gray lips or fingernails, choking or gurgling sounds and extreme drowsiness.

"If naloxone (Narcan) is available, administer it as soon as possible and follow the instructions provided with the medication," Sheriff Ed Lester said in the advisory. 

Narcan can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose, Lester said. After administration, the person experiencing the overdoes should be watched until emergency responders arrive.
