BUTTE, Mont. -- Summer is peak wildfire season, and smoke can present a problem for those with poor breathing conditions. But the Butte-Silver Bow Health Department has a solution for county residents.

As of this week, 60 new air purifiers are now available for residents to borrow throughout the summer.

Butte Health Department doubles air purifier stock for loan out

The Butte-Silver Bow Health Department first began lending out air purifiers four years ago. Now, due to popular demand, they've doubled the number of available units on hand, with support from Montana Resources.

The loan-out program prioritizes vulnerable populations, such as residents age 65 or older, pregnant women, those with pre-existing respiratory conditions, and those unable to purchase an air purifier for themselves.

The program is free, and applications are accepted on a rolling basis until all air purifiers have been distributed.

To apply, call the Butte-Silver Bow Health Department at 406-497-5043 to schedule an appointment. More information is available online at Butte's Montana Wildfire Smoke Information page.
