A 76-year-old Three Forks man on a motorcycle was killed in a Wednesday crash, and a 30-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of causing the wreck.

The crash happened at about 9:02 p.m. Sept. 9 near Jackrabbit Lane and Durston Road, according to the report of the investigating officer, a state trooper.

The motorcyclist, Dana Lentz, was traveling north on Jackrabbit Lane when an eastbound 2024 Toyota Sequoia driven by Marie Ellen Butta began crossing Jackrabbit Lane, the trooper wrote in his affidavit.

“Butta violated the right of way and crashed into a Northbound Motorcycle on Jackrabbit Ln,” reads the affidavit. “Butta stated she never even saw any vehicles Northbound on Jackrabbit Ln before the crash, despite the vehicle's proximity to her location and the presence of other motorcycles and a vehicle in the immediate area. At the time of this crash, it was dark out, all vehicles involved had their headlights on.”

Butta gave the trooper the incorrect name of the road she was driving on despite living in the immediate area and traveling these roadways frequently, the trooper alleged.

Butta, who has an address in Four Corners, reportedly admitted to consuming cannabis around 4 p.m. that day.

“When asked for her husband's phone number, Butta mistakenly gave her own,” reads the affidavit.

Another trooper administered a field sobriety test. Butta allegedly exhibited no clues of intoxication on the horizontal gaze nystagmus portion of the test. She allegedly showed two out of eight clues on the walk and turn segment. She indicated one out of four clues on the one leg stand portion, according to the affidavit.

It’s alleged that Butta provided a breath sample that indicated she had not consumed alcohol.

The testing trooper concluded that Butta was impaired by cannabis.

“During this evaluation, Butta admitted to [the trooper] that she uses cannabis multiple times a day on a daily basis, including on the day of this crash,” reads the affidavit.

Lentz died at the hospital, the affiant wrote.

Butta was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide, operating with a foreign driver’s license for over 60 days in Montana, and failing to yield right of way. Public records indicate she bonded out of jail.
