HELENA, Mont. - A 50-year-old Montana City man was arrested on Sunday after a shooting in the 400 block of Last Chance Gulch, according to a press release from the Helena Police Department (HPD).

HPD said an officer heard an gunshot while on patrol at around 11:00 p.m. Sunday, and found a man with a gunshot wound. He was transported to St. Peter's Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Initial reports indicated that an intoxicated man had fallen on the sidewalk, and then shot the victim when he attempted to offer assistance, HPD said.

A man matching the suspect's description was found in a stairwell in the 400 block of Fuller Avenue, where he was detained. A holster and pistol were also found within feet of the man, according to HPD.

The man was arrested and booked into the Lewis and Clark County Detention Center on felony charges of attempted deliberate homicide and tampering with physical evidence.

The incident is still under investigation.
