CAMPTI, La. — Natchitoches Parish sheriff's deputies have a suspect in custody in connection to death of a woman who died from injuries sustained Monday in a shooting.

Natchitoches Parish Coroner Steven Clanton said the 27-year-old woman from Montgomery died early Tuesday afternoon in an Alexandria hospital.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the victim's family during this difficult time," said Sheriff Stuart Wright.

Just before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, the sheriff's office said it had made an arrest. Details will be released later.

The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was shot Monday night while a passenger in a vehicle. A person who called 911 said she was shot in the Campti area and was being taken to get medical treatment.

Deputies intercepted the vehicle on U.S. Highway 71 in Clarence and found her with a gunshot wound to her thigh. Deputies provided emergency medical care by applying a tourniquet until emergency medical personnel arrived.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Natchitoches Regional Medical Center before being airlifted to a regional trauma center for additional treatment.

Investigators believe the shooting occurred on Adkins Street in Campti.

Detectives spent the night and early Tuesday morning processing the scene, collecting evidence and interviewing potential witnesses.
