State owes millions in unclaimed tax refunds

BATON ROUGE, La. — Louisiana taxpayers have until Sept. 4 to claim millions of dollars in state tax refunds before the funds transfer to unclaimed property.
The Louisiana Department of Revenue mailed letters to 22,751 individual and business taxpayers advising them to claim their funds. A total of $17.5 million in unclaimed refunds is set for transfer to the state treasurer's Unclaimed Property Division.
Taxpayers who receive a notice can claim their refund online at www.revenue.louisiana.gov/UnclaimedRefund or by returning the voucher attached to the letter dated July 24.
The department will mail paper checks to all taxpayers who submit claims by the Sept. 4 deadline.
Any money not claimed by the deadline remains the property of the taxpayer and can be retrieved later from the state treasurer's office.
