SPD: Shreveport mother arrested after special needs child found with injuries

SHREVEPORT, La. — A Shreveport woman was arrested after a teacher reported concerns about injuries observed on a 10-year-old special needs student, according to the Shreveport Police Department.

School Resource Officers were contacted Wednesday by a Youree Drive elementary school teacher after she noticed injuries on the child and became concerned for his welfare.

Officers observed multiple visible injuries, including markings on the child's arms and ears, police said.

Shreveport police Department's Juvenile Services Division detectives were contacted, along with Child Protective Services, and an investigation was launched.

According to police, investigators determined the child's mother, Britannica Young, was responsible for the injuries. Young reportedly admitted to using a belt to strike her 10-year-old son as punishment for behavioral problems at school.

Young was arrested and charged with cruelty to a juvenile.

Cpl. Chris Bordelon said the police department takes allegations involving the abuse or mistreatment of children seriously, particularly when they involve children with special needs or others who may be vulnerable.

SPD also credited the teacher for recognizing the child's injuries and promptly reporting her concerns.
