SPD officer's bloody hand

A SPD officer was injured earlier this week while arresting a man involved in a domestic dispute, police said. 

SHREVEPORT, La. -- A Shreveport police officer was left bloodied and beaten earlier this week during the arrest of a man in a domestic abuse situation. 

The officer, who was not identified, suffered a broken nose, cuts inside his mouth and other injuries. But the man accused of hurting him is behind bars.

It happened on Monday in the 10100 block of Trail Ridge Drive. Police initially responded to the area for a reported disorderly person. After arriving, officers determined the incident involved an intoxicated man and a woman who showed signs of abuse, Cpl. Chris Bordelon said in a social media post. 

The officer tried to separate the two to get information from the woman when the man, identified as John Mooney, repeatedly interrupted the investigation and refused commands, Bordelon said.

Video footage showed Mooney becoming increasingly agitated and confrontational as the officer continued investigating the incident and assisting the victim. When the officer attempted to arrest him, a struggle followed, Bordelon said. 

Mooney is accused of hitting the officer multiple times and even headbutted him, causing the injuries to his face. 

Despite his injuries, the officer was able to take Mooney into custody.

The suspect was charged with three counts of domestic abuse battery with child endangerment, resisting an officer with force or violence and second-degree battery.

The injured officer is expected to make a full recovery.

"This incident is a reminder that domestic violence affects far more than just those involved inside the home. Children, victims, neighbors, and first responders are all placed at risk when violence escalates," Bordelon said. "We commend this officer for his professionalism, courage, and restraint. Faced with a larger, intoxicated, and combative suspect, he remained focused on protecting the victim, enforcing the law, and bringing a dangerous situation under control. Behind every call for service is an officer willing to put their safety on the line to protect someone else's."
