Several people have been shot and at least one may be dead following crashes on 61st Street Thursday afternoon.

SHREVEPORT, La. — The Shreveport Police Department is investigating one death and multiple gunshot injuries at different crime scenes in the city Thursday afternoon.

Shreveport police confirm one death is the result of a shooting. A second victim, originally reported as dead, is alive at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport.

According to police, that person was resuscitated at the scene by the Shreveport Fire Department after a crash on Linwood Avenue.

At one point, more than 40 Shreveport police and fire units were spread between the locations that included 61st Street and Linwood Avenue, Attaway Street and Centenary. 

All of the shootings happened within an hour of each other.

Cpl. Chris Bordelon said a domestic-related shooting scene began near the intersection of Linwood Avenue and 61st Street and later extended to the 5800 block of Attaway Street, where one woman was killed.

A SPD patrol unit has a portion of Attaway Street blocked,  following a report of a shooting Thursday afternoon.

Capt. Jack Miller said a welfare check escalated into the deadly shooting that left several others injured and multiple crashes across west Shreveport before the suspected gunman was taken into custody.

The incident began around 4 p.m. when a mother went to check on her adult son at a residence on Attaway Street. Miller the man began shooting at his mother while she was at the home. The mother left in a white Chrysler 200 with two other women — the driver, who is related to the suspect, and the driver's sister.

The suspect then got into a gray Cadillac CTS and chased the vehicle while continuing to fire shots, the officer said.

The pursuit led to multiple crashes involving innocent motorists.

Miller said the first crash occurred at the intersection of 62nd Street and West 70th Street, where the Chrysler carrying the suspect's mother collided with another vehicle.

Afterward, the suspect crashed his own vehicle near the intersection before getting out and "began just shooting wildly" at passing motorists, people at nearby businesses and others in the area until officers took him into custody.

He said at least three people were shot, and another person was grazed by a bullet, according to preliminary information.

Among those injured were the suspect's mother, an innocent bystander in another vehicle who was believed to have been shot in the arm, a worker at a nearby business who was grazed in the back and a person driving a white van. The exact number of people hospitalized was not immediately known because of the multiple crashes and victims involved.

Miller said bullets also struck two businesses and several vehicles. 

Investigators said they believe the suspect was experiencing mental health issues, but the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.

Unrelated to those incidents was a shooting reported during the same time frame on Centenary. Three men were sitting outside a business when the driver of a gray four-door sedan drove by and started shooting, Bordelon said.

Two of the men escaped gunfire by running through the business. The third man was hit in the leg and thigh, Bordelon said. 

That victim was taken to Ochsner LSU Health hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
