SHREVEPORT, La. — Shreveport police have identified Thomas Lemons, 23, as the suspect accused of fatally shooting a woman Thursday afternoon in west Shreveport, an incident investigators say also led to the death of another man during a vehicle crash.

Lemons is being held on one count of second-degree murder in the death of Imunique Williams, 22. Police said additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.

According to the Shreveport Police Department, officers were dispatched around 3:30 p.m. Thursday to the 5800 block of Attaway Street for a welfare check involving Lemons.

"Started out as a welfare check from a mother to her son... best we could tell, he has some mental health issues," Shreveport Police Capt. Jack Miller said.

While officers were responding, dispatchers received reports of shots fired at 3:44 p.m. Investigators said Lemons chased Williams through the neighborhood and repeatedly fired into her vehicle. Williams was driving with two passengers, including Lemons' mother and another woman.

"A female that he knew and her sister were in the vehicle. So there were three people in the vehicle total — his mom and two other people," Miller said.

Officers found Williams' bullet-riddled vehicle near the intersection of West 61st Street and Linwood Avenue. She had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:49 p.m., according to the Caddo Parish Coroner's Office.

Police said Williams' vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic while she was trying to escape, colliding with another vehicle near Vernon Street and Linwood Avenue. The driver of that vehicle, Chuckie Brooks, 57, died in the crash. Authorities said Friday the crash was directly connected to the shooting.

After the crash, investigators said Lemons continued driving before crashing into a light pole near the same intersection. Police said he then got out of his vehicle and fired at passing vehicles and people nearby before officers took him into custody.

SPD said three other people were struck by gunfire during the incident. They were taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Neighbors on Attaway Street said they knew Lemons as a quiet man before Thursday's violence. Some said they believed he "snapped," though investigators have not confirmed a motive for the shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing.
