SHREVEPORT, La. — Local authorities arrested a man over the weekend for his seventh driving while intoxicated offense following a vehicle collision downtown.

Shreveport Police Department officers were patrolling near Market Street and Texas Street on Sunday at approximately 1 a.m. while monitoring a large crowd when they heard a nearby crash.

Officers discovered two vehicles involved in a wreck. One driver, identified as Jacory Harris, was standing in front of a white Dodge Ram that had sustained heavy front-end damage.

While speaking with Harris, officers said they noticed his speech was slurred and he was unable to walk without losing his balance. Officers also spotted a Styrofoam cup inside the truck's cup holder.

When an officer tried to retrieve the cup, Harris allegedly grabbed the officer and attempted to push him away from the vehicle. Harris became combative and physically resisted when officers attempted to detain him, police said.

Officers eventually took Harris to the ground and secured him using a WRAP restraint system, which is utilized to safely control combative individuals who are violently kicking, flailing, or trying to injure officers.

The Shreveport Fire Department evaluated Harris before he was transported to a local hospital. After receiving medical clearance, he was booked into the Shreveport City Jail.

Harris faces charges of battery of a police officer, resisting an officer with force or violence, and seventh-offense DWI. Records show this marks the fifth DWI arrest for Harris involving the Shreveport Police Department, with additional arrests listed in other jurisdictions. No police officers were seriously injured in the incident.
