Javieon Abbott

SHREVEPORT, La. – After working nonstop throughout the night and into the day, members of the Shreveport Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit have made an arrest in the shooting that claimed the life of 13-year-old Sha'michal Russell and injured two other juveniles.

Detectives arrested Javieon Abbott, 19, on a charge of second-degree murder. Additional charges against Abbott are expected in the coming hours as detectives continue working through the evidence gathered during this investigation, SPD spokesman Cpl. Chris Bordelon said Tuesday night in a news release.

From the moment this case began, SPD homicide detectives worked nonstop to identify the person responsible and get him into custody, Bordelon said.

The investigation began after officers responded Monday night to Olde Salem Village Apartments on Buncombe Road, where three juveniles were struck by gunfire near the basketball court. Russell suffered life-threatening injuries and later died.

A 2-year-old, who Russell's family members identified as his sister, and a 17-year-old were also injured.

Chief Wayne Smith commended the "relentless work" of SPD homicide detectives:

“From the moment this case began, our detectives’ determination to find justice for Sha'michal, his family, and the other children who were injured never wavered. They worked nonstop through the night and throughout the day, following every lead and using every available resource until the person responsible was in custody. We will take care of our children, and we will hold those who harm them accountable.”

SPD also recognized the assistance of the Gator Task Force, including members of the Louisiana State Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation, whose personnel, resources, and assets assisted detectives in bringing this case forward.

The investigation is not over. Additional arrests may follow, Bordelon said.

"Let this serve as a clear message to those who choose violence in our community: when you harm our children, we will come for you. We will use every resource available, and we will not stop until those responsible are held accountable," Bordelon said.
