Shreveport fifth-grader advances to Scripps National Spelling Bee quarterfinals

SHREVEPORT, La. — A student from Fairfield Magnet Elementary School on Wednesday advanced to the quarterfinals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Sanil Thorat, a fifth-grade student, successfully moved into the quarterfinal round of the national competition. This is Thorat's second time competing in the bee, having previously participated in 2024.
Beyond his spelling achievements, Thorat has also been recognized as one of Louisiana’s top students of the year.
Thorat has a variety of interests outside of academics, including playing the piano and running. He also enjoys watching the weather and previously served as a KTBS 3 Junior Weather Watcher in December 2022.
