SHREVEPORT, La. — A 13-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of a 14-year-old girl Sunday afternoon, according to the Shreveport Police Department.

Police initially identified the alleged shooter as the girl's brother. However, KTBS has learned he is not a biological brother; instead, he's the son of a friend of the mother.

Officers responded to the 2400 block of LeGardy Street, where they found Makayla Pennywell suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. She later died from her injuries.

Police say multiple people who were inside the home at the time of the shooting were interviewed as part of the investigation.

Following those interviews, the 13-year-old was arrested and taken to a juvenile detention center.

The investigation remains active as detectives continue gathering evidence and working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
