NATCHITOCHES, La. -- Natchitoches Parish sheriff’s detectives have arrested a Natchitoches man in connection with a fatal shooting in April, Sheriff Stuart Wright said Tuesday. 

Tyvion L. Hooper, 21, was arrested Sunday in a charge of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and aggravated criminal damage to property.

He's accused in the April 1 shooting death of Damarion DeShawn Tyrell Lewis, 18, of Natchitoches. The homicide is the only one so far this year in the parish, excluding the city of Natchitoches. 

Lewis was found suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound inside a house in the 200 block of Independence Drive just south of Natchitoches. Deputies started life-saving measures until EMS arrived. Lewis was first taken to Natchitoches Regional Medical Center then flown to Ochsner LSU Health in Shreveport, where he died on April 2.

Preliminary information indicated the suspect or suspects had left the area before deputies got there. Witnesses and neighbors were questioned. 

Detectives found multiple shell casings in the road near the house, which was heavily damaged by gunshots. 

Wright said investigators worked tirelessly over the past two months, executing multiple search warrants, reviewing evidence, analyzing investigative leads and interviewing numerous people in an effort to identify and apprehend those responsible for Lewis’ death.
 
As a result of their efforts, detectives developed sufficient probable cause to obtain arrest warrants signed by a 10th Judicial District Court judge charging Hooper. He was served with the charges while being held in the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center on unrelated charges of domestic abuse aggravated battery by strangulation and domestic abuse with child endangerment.
 
The investigation remains active and ongoing. Additional arrests are possible.
