MANSFIELD, La. -- A former DeSoto Parish substitute teacher was arrested Friday afternoon on charges connected to an alleged relationship with a student.

Michelle Thomas, 37, of Logansport, was arrested following an investigation of tip from the DeSoto Parish School Board, DeSoto Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman Mark Pierce said in a news release. 

Thomas was booked into the DeSoto Parish Detention Center on the following charges:

  • Four counts of prohibited sexual conduct between a teacher and student
  • Two counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile
  • One count of indecent behavior with a juvenile (grooming)

The investigation led to evidence confirming the allegations against Thomas, Pierce said, and resulting in an arrest warrant being issued. 

The DeSoto Parish School Board has confirmed Thomas is no longer serving as a substitute teacher within the school system.

"Earlier today, the DeSoto Parish Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of a former substitute teacher at Logansport High School. Because  of our commitment to a safe learning environment for our students, the school district takes allegations of employee misconduct seriously and cooperates with law enforcement when such issues arise. We are grateful to the Sheriff’s Office for their thorough investigation and partnership in keeping our students safe. Thank you for your continued support as we work together to maintain a safe and secure environment for all of our students," DeSoto Parish Schools Superintendent Clay Corley said in a separate statement.

Due to the sensitive nature of this case and to protect the privacy of the victims, no further information will be released at this time, Pierce said.

DeSoto investigators said there is always the possibility of additional victims so they ask anyone with information related to this investigation contact the DeSoto Parish Sheriff's Office Mansfield Main Office at (318) 872-3956 and ask to speak with an investigator. Any information provided — regardless of your age — will be handled with confidentiality, Pierce said.

The sheriff's office expressed appreciation to the DeSoto Parish School Board for its swift action in reporting this information and for the "outstanding cooperation and assistance provided throughout this investigation. Their commitment to the safety and well-being of our students played an important role in bringing this case to a successful conclusion."
