The Caddo Parish School Board approved the pay increase earlier this month to combat ongoing teacher recruitment and retention challenges plaguing school districts throughout Louisiana. The raise will provide employees with an average annual compensation increase of about $3,700.
The implementation of the raises comes amid a broader state debate over education funding. School board officials are looking to a June 2 executive order from Gov. Jeff Landry, which aims to redirect $168 million in public education funds toward teacher stipends. If approved, that funding could help Caddo Parish offset the cost of the new raises.
However, critics argue that the governor’s proposal relies too heavily on temporary funding rather than addressing the root cause of low educator pay.
