SHREVEPORT, La. — As hunting season approaches and more families spend time outdoors, Louisiana State Police are urging riders to prioritize safety when operating ATVs and UTVs.During this week's Answering the Call segment, Trooper Eddie Thomas said state police have seen a concerning increase in serious crashes involving off-road vehicles, including several fatalities.“We've seen most of the serious bodily injury crashes or fatalities involving these vehicles happen between the ages of 10 to 14,” Thomas said. “In many cases, they're not wearing a helmet.”Thomas said one of the biggest misconceptions is that ATVs and UTVs are harmless recreational vehicles. While they can be used safely, a single mistake can lead to devastating consequences.State police recommend all ATV riders wear a DOT-approved helmet and eye protection, while UTV occupants should always wear seat belts.
