Mizzou track & field's Sam Innes settles for 23rd at NCAA Outdoor Championships

After opening with a pair of scratches in the men’s hammer throw, Mizzou senior Sam Innes settled into 23rd place with a throw of 206 feet, 8 inches Wednesday afternoon at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Though not the finish expected, as Innes entered ranked 10th in the nation, the Battle alum closed his Mizzou career on the national stage.
Innes was the only Tiger this season to compete in both the indoor and national championships.
The Columbia product placed sixth back in March in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoors, earning first-team All-American honors.
The remaining Mizzou contingent of Valentina Barrios and Skylar Ciccolini compete in the women’s javelin finals at 8:15 p.m. Thursday in Eugene.
Barrios is aiming to defend her javelin title, while Ciccolini is also poised for a high finish.
Records were falling across Day 1 of the championships, particularly at the hands of Auburn.
Auburn's Ja'Kobe Tharp soared to a world-record time of 12.75 seconds in the men's 110-meter hurdles prelims.
Tharp nabbed the world benchmark from the United States' Aries Merritt, who set the previous mark of 12.80 in 2012 in Brussels. He snagged the NCAA record from Team USA's Grant Holloway, who's mark of 12.98 had stood since 2019.
In the men's 4x100 prelims, Auburn's squad sped to an NCAA record of 37.75, topping a three-year-old record.
New Mexico's Habtom Samuel, who won the NCAA Cross Country Championship last fall at Gans Creek, secured the men's 10,000 title with a time of 27:51.31.
After Day 1 of competition, it's a tight race for first after seven scored men's events. Nebraska leads with 28 points, Kansas State follows with 20, and Oregon rounds out the top three with 18.
Other Missouri competitors
Kansas City junior and Oak Park alum Tory Lanham toed off in the men's 200 prelims, taking 14th in 20.45. Only the top nine advanced to the following round.
Southeast Missouri senior and Fort Zumwalt North alum Sullivan Gleason took 24th in the men's pole vault after clearing 17-0¾.
