The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the death of an electrician who was injured while working on renovations at the University of Missouri’s Memorial Stadium in June.

Corey Sooter, 44, of Holts Summit, died June 10 after a career as a journeyman electrician. He worked for Stokes Electric, later going to Kaiser Electric and finishing at BK2 Electric working as a foreman, according to his obituary.

Sooter was involved in a workplace accident June 5, according to a website post by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

Memorial Stadium is in the midst of a $250 million renovation, including reconstruction of the north end zone area. Work began in late 2024.

The project is expected to be completed before the Mizzou football team’s home opener Sept. 3.

“The University of Missouri community is deeply saddened by the passing of Corey Sooter. Our thoughts and prayers are with Corey’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time,” the university said in a statement released by a spokesperson.

A story about Sooter’s death at the stadium site was originally reported Monday by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

OSHA began its investigation the day after Sooter’s death. The case is still open, according to OSHA records.

OSHA has up to six months to complete its investigation, a U.S. Department of Labor spokesperson said in an email. OSHA is part of the U.S. Department of Labor.

OSHA records aren’t clear about the circumstances surrounding Sooter’s injury and death. KOMU 8 News reported Monday that a Columbia Fire Department document showed the incident involved a reported electrocution and energized wires at the stadium.

Sooter is survived by his wife Angela, a son and three daughters. He chose to be an organ donor, according to his obituary.
