DICK’S Drops -18% on Disappointing Q2

DICK’S Sporting Goods DKS has posted its second-straight quarterly earnings miss ahead of today’s opening bell, and shares are down -18% as a result. Earnings of $3.53 per share in its Q2 print missed the Zacks consensus $3.78 by -6.6%. Revenues of $5.59 billion in the quarter was below the $5.64 billion analysts had expected. Weakness in consumer spending on footwear was mentioned in the Q2 statement; we can trace this miss directly to DKS’ acquisition of Foot Locker nearly one year ago. What to Expect from the Stock Market Today

At 10am this morning, housing data continues with New Home Sales for July hitting the tape. Expectations are for a tick-down to +615K seasonally adjusted, annualized units from +628K reported a month ago. We’ll check the all-important discrepancy between single-family homes — which contribute more broadly to the general economy — and multi-family units. We’ll likely stay well off the 12-month high +757K from back in November of last year.

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence report for August is expected to slide from 90.8 reported a month ago to 90.2 today. We’re currently muddling through low levels experienced in the Covid months; most of the past decade showed Consumer Confidence over 100, topping near 140 back in 2018.

Earnings reports after today’s close include three Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) stocks: Zoom Communications ZM, cloud storage platform Box, Inc. BOX and fintech software provider Intuit INTU. Of these, Intuit is expected to see the highest level of earnings growth at +30.55%, while Zoom is expected to see negative earnings growth of -1.96%.

Shares of NVIDIA NVDA are up +1.5% at this hour, looking to snap a 7-day losing streak a day ahead of its Q2 earnings report after the close Wednesday. Zacks Vice President Kevin Matras calls NVIDIA’s earnings report the “official” end of earnings season each quarter. The Zacks Rank #2 (Buy)-rated chip giant expects 90%+ growth on both earnings and revenues for the quarter.
