Recognition honors Sercu's lasting contributions and commitment to the credit union movement
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 16, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- University Credit Union (UCU) is proud to announce that longtime EVP/Chief Intelligence Officer, Steve Sercu has been selected for recognition as an Unsung Hero by America's Credit Union Museum, honoring his longstanding service, leadership and contributions to the credit union movement.

America's Credit Union Museum created its "Woven in History: A Tapestry of Unsung Heroes" exhibit to recognize individuals whose dedication and impact have helped shape the credit union movement, often without widespread recognition. Honorees represent the cooperative values of service, integrity, innovation, mentorship and a commitment to people helping people.
UCU nominated Sercu in recognition of a 40 year plus career defined by service to members, colleagues and the credit union movement.
"Steve represents what the credit union movement is supposed to be about," said Richard Wada, President and CEO of University Credit Union. "He leads with humility, puts people first and has spent years making a difference without ever seeking recognition for himself. That is exactly why being named an Unsung Hero is such a fitting and meaningful honor."
The Unsung Heroes initiative is part of America's Credit Union Museum's work to preserve the stories of individuals whose contributions have advanced cooperative finance. Located in Manchester, New Hampshire, at the site where America's first credit union opened in 1908, the Museum preserves and shares the history of the credit union movement while recognizing the people continuing that legacy today.
"What makes Steve special isn't simply what he has accomplished, but how he has accomplished it," Wada said. "He cares deeply about our members, our employees and the purpose behind the work we do. His influence can be seen in the people he has supported, the leaders he has helped develop and the culture of service he continues to strengthen at UCU."
