A plush knit cover forms the top layer, with enough stretch to move naturally with the comfort layers beneath. Below the cover sits 2.5 inches of foam containing built-in cooling materials, followed by a 1-inch supportive foam layer that runs the length of the mattress and cushions common pressure points at the hips and shoulders. A final 1-inch layer sits beneath the air chambers, adding stability to the base.

ComfortMode Lux, a related model in the same collection, measures 11 inches, adds hip relief, and includes 25 percent more built-in cooling material than the standard version, according to Sleep Number's product listing.

Trial Period and Warranty Support Long-Term Use

Sleep Number says its beds are designed to last 25 years. ComfortMode also comes with a 100-night trial, giving customers time to experience the mattress at home before deciding whether it is right for them.

The mattress includes a 10-year limited warranty. Coverage is provided in full during the first two years, followed by limited coverage for the remaining eight years.

ComfortMode should be placed on a firm, flat surface, such as a platform bed, Integrated Base, Adjustable Base, or bunkie board. A traditional box spring may not provide enough support for the mattress. Bases are sold separately, so the total cost will depend on whether the buyer already has a compatible foundation. The mattress's adjustment system also requires access to a power outlet.
