On a day when all eyes were on City Hall for the vote on the divisive Projet Montreal motion on the Middle East, city council paid emotional tribute to both Michel Mizrahi and to SPVM Constable Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, both of whom were killed in the June 22 shooting rampage in the CDN-NDG borough.

The first to speak was CDN-NDG Borough Mayor Stephanie Valenzuela, who tearfully addressed Benredouane’s family, followed by Côte-des-Neiges district councillor Émilie Brièr, Projet Montréal leader Ericka Alneus, and finally Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada.

A moment of silence followed as Benredouane’s family wept. Mizrahi was a Jew. Benredouane was a Muslim. Two men from two communities, traditionally the focus of so much division, united in grief. n
